Economic Development Departments, Chambers of Commerce and Military Organizations have been invited to the first meeting of the Army SPEA Response Action Team.
June 26, 2014, the Department of the Army released a Supplemental Programmatic Environmental Assessment (SPEA) to assess the impact of further drawing down our nation’s active Army component from 490,000 to 420,000 soldiers. As part of this proposed drawdown, they are evaluating potential impacts on bases across the continental United States and in Alaska and Hawaii.
The worst-case option includes a potential reduction of 16,000 soldiers and civilians at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. If that were to occur, the Army estimates the JBLM Region of Influence (ROI)—encompassing Pierce and Thurston Counties—would see an income reduction of $971.6 million; what the Army acknowledges to be a “significant socioeconomic impact” to Pierce and Thurston Counties.
We have an opportunity to shape the Army’s final decision on where, when, and how this drawdown may occur, but we must take advantage of the current public comment period for the SPEA, which closes August 25, 2014.
The Economic Working Group of the South Sound Military & Communities Partnership is convening this special action team to analyze the Army’s proposal and develop appropriate talking points and advocacy for our communities to use in preparing comments on the SPEA.
Be sure to review the document here and come prepared to roll up your sleeves and get to work. Make your registration so that working space may be prepared for all attendees.
