Nov 3 Washington Policy Center's 13th Annual Health Care Luncheon
The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber is excited to be a Co-Presenter of the Washington Policy Center's 13th Annual Health Care Luncheon.
Washington Policy Center's 13th Annual Health Care Luncheon is one of WPC’s most anticipated policy events each year. The event will begin at 11am with a bi-partisan panel session to review the 2015 Legislative Session and look ahead to health care policy in the 2016 Session. Following the panel session will be our keynote luncheon with Michael Tanner.
The conference will feature Michael Tanner, senior fellow at The Cato Institute and author of the new book, Going for Broke: Deficits, Debt and the Entitlement Crisis, as this year’s keynote speaker.
The event’s 200+ attendees will include state legislators, local elected officials, agency staff, business owners, the biotech community, patient advocacy groups and industry representatives.

Nov 12 John Anderson Military Citizen of the Year Award 11/12/15
The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber’s Military Affairs Committee will present the John Anderson Military Citizen of the Year Award on November 12, 2015 in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Tacoma #8.
The Anderson Military Citizen of the Year award is presented to an exemplary recipient who has demonstrated the contributions that active-duty persons make to our community.

Rear Admiral Jeffrey Ruth
About RAdm Ruth Commander, Navy Region NW, Rear Adm. Jeffrey Ruth served as commanding officer USS Nimitz (CVN 68) from March 29, 2012 until July 8, 2014. He also commanded the Rooks of Electronic Attack Squadron and the U.S. 6th Fleet’s flagship, USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) home ported in Gaeta, Italy.
Ruth graduated with distinction from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering. He reported to Flight School at Naval Air Station Pensacola and was designated a naval flight officer. He also holds a master’s degree in business administration from Colorado State University, attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, and the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School at NAS Patuxent River, MD, as part of the NPS/TPS Co-op program.
Upon completion of the course he was awarded a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering. He has also served as an operational planner on the staff of the Commander, Allied Forces North Europe in Brunssum, the Netherlands and attended Nuclear Power Training.
Ruth has been awarded the Legion of Merit (two awards), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (three Awards), the Air Medal (five individual Awards with Combat “V” and eight Strike/Flight), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three Awards, one with Combat “V”), and other personal, unit and campaign awards.
About John H. Anderson
John H. Anderson served as Tacoma’s mayor in the early to mid-1950s. He was also a past Chair of the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber Board of Directors, as well as a successful local businessman.

Erin Shannon Director, Center for Small Business Washington Policy Center
Erin Shannon is the Director of the Center for Small Business at Washington Policy Center and manages WPC’s Olympia office. Over the last three years she has testified numerous times before legislative committees on small business issues, and has been quoted in news stories in local and national publications, including Fox News and CNN Money. Her op-eds regularly appear in newspapers around the state, including The Seattle Times and The Puget Sound Business Journal, and she has been interviewed on numerous radio and TV programs. Before joining Washington Policy Center, Erin was the Public Relations Director of Washington state's largest pro-small business trade association, and was formerly a Legislative Correspondent for U.S. Congressman Randy Tate in Washington, D.C. Over the past 15 years she has appeared regularly in print, broadcast and radio media. She was a recurring guest on ABC's Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect," until the show's cancellation in 2002, and participated in a live, on-stage version of Politically Incorrect in Seattle with Bill Maher. Erin has served as the spokesperson for several pro-small business initiative campaigns including Referendum 53, repealing increases in unemployment insurance taxes; Initiative 841, repealing the state's ergonomics rule; and Initiative 1082, to end the state's monopoly on workers' compensation. Erin holds a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Washington.

Bethel School District Bond Proposal by Amy Pivetta Hoffman, South County Branch Board member.
Challenger High School is the Bethel School District's alternative high school. Made up of only 14 portables, the school is limited in the number of students it can serve and the type of instructional programs it can offer. The Bethel School Board is considering a bond proposal for 2016 that would build a new Challenger High School on the location of the old Spanaway Elementary School on Pacific Avenue.
