HVAC Technician

Work Schedule:
FT; Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm.
 
General Description:     
The HVAC Technician is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all heating, cooling, and air conditioning systems on campus, and for the preventive maintenance of all ventilation systems. Reports to the Maintenance Manager.
 
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:            

  • Operate and maintain air conditioning units, chillers, heat pumps, furnaces, ducts and dampers, and electronic and computerized controls; inspecting and troubleshooting all equipment on a routine schedule. Document settings and findings.
  • Maintain all building air intake, exhaust and filter systems. Clean/change filters, lubricate motors and equipment, repair and replace units as necessary. Reclaim refrigerants.
  • Respond to calls for temperature control in buildings and/or routine problems.
  • Inspect and operate all HVAC equipment to check for efficiency, making adjustments to equipment and controls where necessary. Make repairs or replacements where needed.
  • Respond to after hour emergencies or repairs when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:              
  • Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of heating, refrigeration, air conditioning theory and/or pneumatic and electrical control systems as applicable to the work specialty.
  • Skill in the use of tools of the trade; ability to perform emergency repairs; ability to work with intricate and delicate equipment and tools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relations with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to make decisions and work independently without close supervision.
  • Knowledge of local and national fire underwriter’s codes as applicable to work performed.
  • Knowledge of computer systems pertaining to HVAC operations. 
Required Qualifications:             
  1. Five years of experience in the field of HVAC systems.
  2. Technical/trade school graduation or equivalent apprenticeship.
  3. High school diploma or GED.
  4. CFC (Chlorofluorocarbon) Handlers Certification or the ability to obtain one before beginning employment.
  5. Valid driver’s license (Must have had a valid driver’s license for at least 2 years).
  6. Finalist applicant must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background check, pass PLU’s Driver’s Certification Training, and provide an original copy of their Driving Record (5-year Employment Extract). 
Work Conditions:           
  • Work conditions vary; may be exposed to conditions that are hot, dry, dusty, cold, wet, and humid. May be exposed to high noise volumes and vibration.
  • May occasionally work in high places and around very heavy equipment with large tools. 
Physical Requirements:
  • Required to stand and walk, and may occasionally be required to climb, balance, bend and reach, stoop, and kneel or work in cramped areas.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Good hearing, depth perception, and color vision.
