Assistant Director of Admission - Equity & Access

Work Schedule:
FT; Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. Extensive travel, evening and weekend work are required. Must be available and willing to work non-traditional hours as needed.
 
Please note that currently, due to the pandemic, all travel and most in-person recruitment activities have been suspended. Recruitment travel programs will resume when safe to do so from a public health perspective.
 
General Description:     
The Assistant Director of Admission for Equity & Access will take the primary lead to formulate and implement strategies to identify and recruit underrepresented populations, including students of color, students who identify as LGBTQIA+, first generation college students and students from low socio-economic households. The Assistant Director will provide a respected and inclusive leadership voice within the Office of Admission and across the Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) campus about the needs and issues facing college-aspiring students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.
 
The Assistant Director of Admission for Equity & Access is also an Admission Counselor for a geographic territory. They have the responsibility for the outreach and recruitment of prospective students; review of applications for admission; communicating with and counseling students, family members, high school guidance counselors, and others regarding all aspects of PLU, including the admissions process and financial aid; managing recruitment territories; and assisting members of the admissions staff with a variety of recruitment and yield events. The position is strongly focused on providing excellent follow-through, customer service, and communicating the educational opportunities available at PLU. The Assistant Director is specifically responsible for meeting individual recruitment goals and for contributing to the overall recruiting goals of the admission team and office. Reports to the Associate Dean of Admission.
 
For the foreseeable future, all recruitment activities have been virtualized. Familiarity with virtual event platforms and remote presentation are strongly recommended, as well as the flexibility to adjust to rapidly changing circumstances.
 
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:            

  • Articulate the university message to prospective students, families, high school counselors, community college personnel, alumni, community members and more.
  • Focus on enrolling diverse, talented, underserved students who are able to succeed and thrive at PLU. These students may include, low income, First Generation, Students of Color, Undocumented Students, or LGBTQIA+ identified students.
  • Work directly with the Associate Dean of Admission to develop and execute an equity and access strategic plan for enrollment, including assessing and evaluating these initiatives.
  • Work with the Office of Admission leadership team to provide guidance, training, and direction on outreach and communication to external organizations, underrepresented students, and their families as it relates to recruiting and supporting diverse populations.
  • Develop a recruitment plan for an assigned geographic territory and one for equity & access recruitment to identify, recruit, evaluate and yield candidates.
  • Communicate with prospective students throughout the recruitment and application process, including extensive correspondence via phone and email and meeting with them and their families during campus visits.
  • Generate and review admission applications.
  • Represent the university at a variety of functions including, college fairs, high school visits, receptions and community events.
  • Utilize our CRM and institutional data to effectively manage territory and special projects.
  • Serve as the PLU liaison with key external partners targeting underrepresented, first-generation and low-income students such as College Bound, Act Six, College Access Network, College Possible, Fulfillment Fund and AVID.
  • Actively work with the Diversity Center, Center for Gender, Equity, cultural student organizations, Campus Ministry and other campus constituencies to assist in recruitment and yield activities.
  • Manage the 253 PLU Bound Scholarship program.
  • Provide Financial Aid counseling and advising.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:              
  • Sensitivity to the concerns of diverse student populations and knowledge of equity- and inclusion-related issues in higher education.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team, handle multiple tasks with a strong attention to detail.
  • Sound appreciation for the values of a comprehensive liberal arts education. A strong commitment to the College’s goals and mission.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to follow through consistently on inquiries, requests, and suggestions.
  • Ability to resolve problems and to develop relevant alternatives and recommendations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to establish positive public relations for the college; and to interact effectively with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to form strong coalitions with internal and external constituencies.
 
Required Qualifications:             
  1. Bachelor’s degree.
  2. One year of related experience. Graduate education may substitute for some experience.
  3. Experience giving presentations to groups of various sizes.
  4. Demonstrated ability to plan events.
  5. Demonstrated experience networking and/or building professional relationships.
  6. Valid driver’s license (Must have had a valid driver’s license for at least 2 years).
  7. Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background check, declaration regarding sexual misconduct, provide an original copy of their Driving Record (5-year Employment Abstract), and pass PLU’s internal Driver’s Certification Training.
 
Preferred Qualifications:            
  • Master’s degree.
  • Proficiency or fluency in a second language.
               
Physical Requirements:
  • Some lifting and carrying of boxes and supplies up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
  • Frequent sitting while performing keyboarding, writing, driving and counseling and standing while at college fairs for 2-3 hours.
  • Must be able to communicate with prospective students, other staff, faculty, and others in person or by phone.
  • Flexibility and ability to work evenings, weekends and to travel multiple days in a row is required.
